Hyman's is a Charleston institution dedicated to having long lines of tourists waiting for it's fried seafood and shellfish. Why people wait in this line, when there are lots of other great restaurants within a short walk, is not clear, but they do.
Inside, they have about 6 roooms, and they really do a lot of volume. Some would say too much, as housekeeping is regularly reported to be a problem. Sometime, when they are rapidly turning over tables, cleanliness standards can get a little sloppy.
The building itself is quite handsome and historical in character. The bar is impressive - but you may never see it if you don't see all of the rooms. When escorted upstairs, remember that the cute circular fire escape in the back of the room can be a pain when escorting little Johnny or Grandpa to the restrooms downstairs.
The food is just fine. The seafood is fresh and well seasoned. Their crispy fried flounder is always good, and people rave about their crab dip, hushpuppies, clamari, even their chicken, which (surprise surprise) also tastes like seafood.
Everything is just fine - but not special - and certainly not worth the wait. A little pricey for what you get.
I hope Hyman's continues to be so successful, because it opens up tables at better restaurants for the rest of us.
