Cute, Family-Run Mediterranean in Grandview
Mazah is a very cute, quaint little Mom and Pop restaurant along the Grandview Avenue strip. They have maybe 10 tables inside, and two out, so it's tiny. But the flavors are huge, and it's all made fresh daily, while you wait.
Mazah serves all of your favorite Mediterranean favorites, like Baba Ghanoush, Hummus, Tsatsziki Dip, Falafel, Grape Leaves, and some others with which I was not familiar, such as Kibbeh Balls (a mixture of ground lean beef and lamb with cracked wheat shaped into balls stuffed with ground beef, onions, pine nuts and spices. Deep fried and served with plain homemade yogurt upon request) and Fatayer (homemade pita pie stuffed with spinach, onions and spices. stuffed with lettuce, tomatoes, and tahini sauce). I watched several of these go by, and they all looked good.
I had the Lamb-Kebob with char-grilled marinated strips of lamb in MAZAH’s special marinade, together with a large Greek salad and some rice. The salad was very fresh and flavorful, with lots of feta. The rice also had a nice flavor, and had almond slivers on top. The lamb, however, was a little tough - good flavor, but tough and chewey. I wouldn't order that again, especially at $16 for a lunch combo plate.
By the time was finished, they had a line out the door. Word about this little neighborhood gem has clearly gotten out. It is always nice to see a humble family run operation succeed in the middle of tough economic times, but a combination of good food, good service, and a cute decor has clearly worked well here.
