Above Average Greek
This is a new entrant to the Upper Arlington market, a sister store to the restaurant of the same name in Dublin. It is located in the strip center just west of the OSU softball fields off of Lane, aka now-defunct Fiesta Lanes.
When you first enter the Greek Corner, you are immediately struck by the mural on the left wall, an extensive Greek sea scene that spans the length of the restaurant. It looks as though it is painted by an artist. There is a nice bar on the right side of the interior, and a door which leads out to a nice sized patio (not today - 92 degrees). I was there for early lunch, and I recall thinking they were well staffed for early in the week. My service was indeed efficient and friendly.
I asked about the specialties of the house, and was told that the gyro platter was the way to go. You can order a gyro, along with french fries, soup, lemon potatoes or tossed salad - all for $7. I tried the avgolemono soup, and it was just alright - crreamy, and nicely flavored, but not much lemon, and the rice was a little mushy for my tastes.
I have to admit that I am not usually a big gyro guy, but this is one of the best I've had. Comprised of Gyro meat wrapped in pita bread with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and creamy garlic sauce, this was tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. I was especially impressed with the succulent meat, which was thicker and moister than the the usually dry shavings you get other places.
The menu is surprisingly large and diverse. In addition to conventional Greek appetizers such as spicy feta cheese, melitzanosalata, skordalia, spinach feta, tzatziki, hummus. Greek entrees include gyro, lamb pita, souvlaki, beef pita, falafel pita, and chicken gyro. In addition there is an extensive American menu, including burgers, pastas, and paninis of all types (Italian, New York, Greek, veggie, chicken melt, etc.).
All in all, Greek Corner is a very likable place, nicely decorated, good staff, free and easy parking, but most of all food that is well prepared, well spiced, served in nice portions and at very reasonable prices.
