Trattoria Roma has been around for probably two decades. Years ago, Richie diPaolo moved to this current location, taking over the location from the recently departed Moretti's, now in Arlington. Richie, a foodservice wholesaler, loved this place, and would come almost every night and eat alone at the end of the bar. Shawn and his partners have assumed the reins of leadership when DiPaolo passed away. Dipaolo's picture, along with his beloved wife, still dominate the bar scene.
I have always loved Trattoria Roma. I like the Sinatra music, the big martinis, Shawn's gracious welcome, the great food and service, and the whole scene. I like sitting in the bar area in the cold of winter, sipping some Sangiogese and eating terrific Italian comfort food. For years, I would go every Thursday night.
The menu has evolved over the years, and some of my favorites have been dropped. No problem, says Shawn - tell us what you want and we'll make it. Their Pasta Arabiatta is awesome, the veal shank is killer, the spaghetti and meatballs are wonderful, and a real bargain. their bolognese is hearty and flavorful, and
their Caprese salad - in season - just perfect. Their signature dish - Vitello Trattoria Roma - is really rich and special.
The place itself also has style. The main dining room is a narrow and deep, and can get noisy at night. On weekends, they can get slammed and service can suffer. The area by the bar is my favorite, or outside, although get there early as there are only a handful of patio tables. Great drinks, and an interesting crowd to watch.
Trattoria Roma is a real-deal Italian independent, serving delicious food in a great atmosphere. It's a little pricey, but they have many affordable dishes and regular specials.
