Excellent Thai on High
I have eaten at Nida's at the Short North, but had never tried Nida's on High. Big mistake.
I was there for lunch today. It wasn't very crowded but I grabbed a seat at the counter to watch what I could of preparation. I am alwasy amazed at how many moving parts there are to a busy restaurant.
Nida's has always been slightly north of the center of the action in the Short North, but growth in the number of eating and drinking places in the area has made her location more poular. It is not a large space, but very comfortable and warm, with a full bar, and and a large menu of Thai, curries, and related Asian cuisines.
I had the Tom Yum soup with shrimp, and I have to say it is some of the best in the city. It was pretty spicy, with a savory broth in which floated fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, some lemongrass, and shrimp - with tail on. The shrimp were just right - not too over cooked, as often is the case. A really nice dish.
The pad Thai was also excellent. I had it prepared with chicken, and there was hardly a bite without significant protein. Again, fresh herbs and vegetables helped make the dish. My only complaint was that the sauce, which had a great intense flavor, was a little too plentiful - almost like gravy. Maybe just a hair too much sauce, but still very delicious.
I received prompt and attentive service from the young man who seemed to be serving the entire place. He was busy, but friendly, and good at what he did.
I recommend Nida's for anyone loooking for moderately priced Asian fare, especially Thai, in a slightly out-of-the-way location whcih has good charm, service, and food.
