Bagels, Deli Sandwiches, and Sushi
Cornerstone Deli started off as a bagel joint, but has since branched out to include all sorts of other things.
You can tell they still love bagels, as it occupies a large share of their menu. Breakfast, in general, seems to be a big meal for them.
The deli side of the operation is well developed, with cold and hot sandwiches and wraps. Many are conventional deli items like a reuben or tuna melt, but they also have a large range of curiously named signature sandwiches like the Joe Show Sandwich with Roast Beef, Swiss Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato And French Dressing, or Solomon's Choice, made of Hummus, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion And Sprouts. Prices are very reasonable, typically under $6 a sandwich.
But what I didn't expect to find here was a large menu of Asian dishes, mostly Chinese, but with a smattering of Thai and Japanese items. So I decided to go with a tempura bowl, which is a large bowl of rice, topped with tempura fried veggies and six beautiful shrimp.
Sadly, the presentation was great but the food only average. The tempura was WAY too thick - one of my shrimp looked like a corn dog. While the shrimp themselves were fresh and tender and tasty, the batter detracted significantly, and the tempura dipping sauce was lackluster and vague in taste. But the biggest disappointment was the vegetables. They looked like they were chopped up to top a pizza or a salad, then they had been dipped into the thick tempura batter, then flash fried. They were loaded on top of the rice as one big unit, resembling a pile of hash browns. It was all very greasy.
If I go back, I will stick to the deli operation. I saw a number of sandwiches go by that looked delicious. They also seem to do a big takeout business.
Overall, I can see why this place is successful. If I lived nearby I would probably eat here often.. But I don't, and I didn't think the food or the environment or the experience was so distinctive that I would like make this a destination for another meal. Convenient, good, but not great.
