Bargain Beer and Burger Joint in the SN
I hadn't been to the Press Grill for many years. It hadn't changed a bit. In fact, I'd swear the same people were on those very same bar stools last time I was there.
Just for context, the last time I went, I was with the then assistant editor of the Columbus Citizen Journal (last date of print was in 1985). Back then, "the press" actually went here.
By the standards of the Short North today, this is a narrow and dark dive bar. We thought it was cozy and classic - arrogantly shabby. It is first and foremost a bar, with wide a wide range of beers from all over the world. Many of its regular denizens look like beer bar people. But some things have changed.
The new owners have kept the best of the old but have updated both the menu and crowd. It is a more hip scene, with great tasting food, and a more interesting, more gentrified clientèle. The results are very gratifying.
They are known for their burgers, but we didn't try these. We had their pepperoni pizzas, some quesadillas, and some of the best fried onion rings I've ever had. The pizzas were delicious. The food is fresh and served still steaming from the oven. The wine list is now competitive with the beer list, with numerous tasty choices.
We ate our lips off and the tab was dirt cheap.
The Press gets crowded because it serves great tasting food at moderate prices in a very laid back atmosphere. We had excellent service the night we were there - it's a very friendly place. There was good music, a good vibe, and it's just a classic joint.
Off the beaten path, and crowded for good reason. Worth seeking out.

Press Grille
Give it a try for a casual evening out.
| What to order | Pizza. Lately, I have been having a small problem with craving this pizza for its crust and the pepperoni they use on the pizza combine to hit the spot. |
| What to drink | Full bar available |
| When to go | Well, I think the younger you are the later you should go. We recently stopped in on a Saturday night and were seated immediately around 7 pm. |
| How to save money | Avoid the stock market, oh you mean at the Press Grille. Well, it is very inexpensive so you are saving money by going there. |
